- Age 40 years or older
- Race and ethnic background- aboriginal Hispanic, south Asian, Asian or African descent
- Family history – first degree relative with type 2 diabetes
- History of gestational diabetes
- Some medical conditions

How to minimize your risk: What you can do.
Some risk factors that can be controlled, such as being overweight, having high blood pressure or cholesterol, nutrition, and activity level.
Other risk factors such as family history and age cannot be changed, but still impact your risk. Talk to your healthcare provider about your risk level, and help work out a plan to help address these concerns.
Diagnosis, Screening & Treatment
When should I be tested for diabetes?
- Screening for diabetes is done with a blood test.
- Recommended screening every 3 years in individuals over 40 years of age
- Earlier and/or more frequently in people with additional risk factors for diabetes
How is diabetes treated?
Treatment of Diabetes varies depending on patient needs, goals and lifestyle. There are several different kinds of medications taken by mouth for the treatment of diabetes. Depending on how the pancreas is working, a patient may need to be on insulin.
Sometimes blood sugars can be controlled with only lifestyle changes, but this is not always the case.
